Fish On Bicycle
found object assemblage 2022
Needing to fill a specific space in a bathroom with art, I originally thought about a large blown glass octopus like one I had seen in a gallery in Alaska. On line art searches were not turning up what I was after, but I was coming across lots of fish art and beginning to be inspired to create an original piece. Once I jumped in and started the process this entire piece came together over a weekend, and all of my first attempts at construction techniques worked – both highly unusual and thus very satisfying. And perhaps most pleasantly surprising was finally finding something to do with a set of old souvenir spoons that had been passed down through my family. My maternal grandmother and grandfather got some of these on their travels and then my mother took over the collection and added to it. I remember as a child seeing them displayed in a corner cabinet in the dining room. I had forgotten I had them, and as I was rooting around in my found object bins to find items I might use on this piece, I came across them and realized they might give the illusion of scales. The metal fish shape was cut from the back of an old vintage stove that I am using in my studio for storage, and the rest of the objects were things I picked up in my junking knowing I might someday have a use for them.
