The Making of Man
found object assemblage 2017, 52 1/2 inches X 29 1/2 inches
I purchased the puzzle featured on this piece in fall 2011 at a garage sale for $1. I intended to use it as my gift for the annual Los Angeles Frontrunners holiday gift stealing game, it seemed the perfect gag gift for the group. As the holidays neared, however, something about the puzzle gnawed at the edges of my thoughts. I began thinking about our daily preparations to “make ourselves up” every day to go out into the world. Somewhere along the way the phrase “the making of man” came into my head and I expanded my ideas to consider the ultimate making of man – creation – to how man over time continually creates himself through art, popular culture to what it means to be a person. Interact with the piece. Push buttons, smell the Aqua Velva, and look in the mirror and ask yourself “who are you going to be today?”
